Environmental health promotion

This assessment involves choosing one health promotion strategy and researching, identifying and analysing one specific health promotion initiative where your chosen strategy is being applied.
You are asked to research, and choose an application of health promotion strategy in either a high income or low/middle income country or region. Write a critical analysis of the chosen health promotion strategy, using both course notes and additional literature including online sources.
Your paper should effectively:
Explain the main characteristics of your chosen health promotion strategy as well as the conceptual underpinnings and the values and assumptions, which inform it.
Describe and critically analyse the specific initiative you have selected to analyse as an example of this strategy in action. Critically analyse the application of your assigned health promotion strategy in the context in which it is implemented.
Identify the social aspects of health that are relevant in the specific context of the health promotion initiative you have selected; and critically analyse the ways in which your chosen health promotion initiative targets individual behaviour, social practice and/or social determinants to effect change.
Apply best practice health promotion principles in planning and evaluation to critically appraise the development and application of the specific intervention you are looking at. This critical appraisal also needs to take account of the specific context (e.g. high or low/middle income country) in which the intervention is being developed and implemented.
Steps to guide your paper development:
Choose a health promotion strategy that you would like to analyse, e.g. education for better health.

Narrow down and clarify a specific aspect of your strategy. For example if your chosen strategy is education for better health, you may choose to narrow your focus to education for empowering communities; if you choose healthy settings you may narrow down more specifically to healthy cities or to health promoting workplaces etc. Decide if you want to explore the strategys application in either a high income or low/middle income country or region.
Do a search of printed or electronic journals and publicly available project documents to find an initiative that is largely based on application of the strategy in the context in which it is implemented. Note that often strategy design and implementation differ whether they are implemented in high or low/middle-income countries. Note also that often initiatives will involve combining multiple strategies, so make sure you choose one that offers good possibilities for critically analysing the particular health promotion strategy you are focusing on. From your research, choose ONE program, initiative or project to be the main focus of your analysis.
From your research, establish what is understood (or debated, or gaps in knowledge) about the behaviours, social practices and/or social change involved in the particular application you have selected. Use this literature to inform your analysis of the ways in which the initiative you are focusing on targets individual behaviour, social practice and/or social determinants.
Use course notes and other supporting literature to describe the strategy and to critically analyse the application of the strategy in the context you have chosen.
Prepare a paper presenting your analysis focussing on the areas noted in the assessment criteria table below.

You will be assessed on your research on and discussion of :
The social aspects of health that the application you have chosen would be expected to engage with /relevant in the context of health promotion initiative you have chosen and
The way in which the health promotion strategy you have chosen targets individual behaviour, social practice and/or social determinants to affect change
