Students will also be required to complete a 5-6-page paper for this course. The paper aims to help the student integrate theory to real life situations. For this purpose, students are asked to interview an adult (age 21 or older) with experiences directly relevant to the topics discussed in class. The topic choices are: families who have experienced divorce, families who have lost a parent with chronic illness, blended families, immigrant families and military families. Emphasis should be given in exploring the family’s experiences (especially the children’s) during these transitions. Carrying out an interview presents a “teachable moment” by itself. You will need to plan your interview questions in advance in an ethical and culturally competent manner. Students should also follow basic ethical considerations for this assignment (participants’ consent, confidentiality, and anonymity).
