Provide a close reading of the assigned excerpt of Diana Abu Jaber’s The Language of Baklava. Pick and trace a recurring idea, theme, or motif (or more than one) within the assigned excerpt and analyze and interpret its significance (or multiple layers of meaning) within the text (or selected vignettes from within the selection). Since this is a ‘cookbook-memoir,’ be sure to take the genre into consideration in your analysis, and foreground the distinctiveness of memories that are, or appear to be ‘food-centered,’ but that are also simultaneously about much more than food, evoking and addressing complications of individual and collective identity, and of belonging/not-belonging to multiple collectives in the Jordanian-Arab-American context portrayed in this work.
