Parent Interview

In recent years, there have been major changes in family structures and increased
numbers of culturally and linguistically diverse families living in the U.S. To be most
effective, early childhood professionals who work with families must have an
understanding of individual family characteristics and circumstances. This assignment
will help you get to know one family and learn about factors that impact family life and
child rearing.
I. Interview a parent (or a couple) raising one or more children birth to 8 who receive outof-home
care and/or are in school. If at all possible, select a parent whose background
experiences or culture is different from your own. Use this interview protocol to guide
your conversations with this parent. Feel free to ask follow up questions for
clarification or details as appropriate. As a professional, it is your responsibility to be
respectful and non judgmental. Your goal is to understand this parents day-to-day life,
the circumstances that impact it, and her/his perspectives on parenting and family roles.
